Buying Freshly Brewed Coffee and Sandwiches for Breakfast on the Shinkansen
When boarding the Shinkansen for business trips or travel, I often buy breakfast at Tokyo Station. Sometimes it's a bento or rice balls, other times it's bread and coffee, or just coffee. For coffee lovers like me, I recommend 'NewDays', where you can purchase freshly brewed coffee at a convenience store price of 110 yen (tax included) even early in the morning. They open at 6:30 AM. After 7 AM, you can get takeout from cafes in Gransta or Ecute inside the ticket gates, but most shops open early in the morning at 6:30 AM only offer canned coffee or bottled beverages. If you've given up on bringing freshly brewed coffee onto the Shinkansen due to the early hour, please refer to this information. (As of November 1, 2023)

Opening hours: 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM
Located on the 1st floor central passage inside Tokyo Station,
near the Marunouchi Central Gate.
It's between platforms 1 & 2 (Chuo Line) and platforms 3 & 4 (Keihin-Tohoku Line/Yamanote Line) ,Proceeding left in the photo leads to the Marunouchi Central Gate, and right leads to the Yaesu Central Gate.

Opening hours: 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM
Located on the 1st floor north passage inside Tokyo Station,
near the Marunouchi North Gate.
It's next to the stairs of platforms 1 & 2 (Chuo Line). Proceeding left in the photo leads to the Marunouchi North Gate, and right leads to the Yaesu North Gate. This store is more spacious than ①.

For rice lovers, there's a rich selection of rice balls and bento boxes.
Hot & Iced Coffee

After paying for the coffee, take a coffee cup and proceed to the coffee machine.

Iced coffee cups are purchased at the staffed register. They're filled with plenty of ice.

It takes about a minute to brew coffee with coffee machine. Lids, straws, syrup, and milk are available on the adjacent shelf.

In line with the end of in-train wagon sales on the Tokaido Shinkansen on October 31, 2023, coffee and ice cream vending machines have been installed on the platforms of Nozomi stop stations, allowing purchases before boarding. It's a pleasant point that you can bring them even on the first Shinkansen of the day. There was also a vending machine on the up platform at Shizuoka Station. (As of June 28, 2024)

Freshly Ground Coffee Vending Machine. Offers a wide variety of options, including coffee, tea, and more. With multiple buttons for choices like cream, sugar, or whipped toppings, it might take a while to decide! Prices range from 300 to 500 yen.

You can watch the coffee being brewed on the top monitor. Hot coffee takes about 95 seconds to brew, so be mindful of your time to avoid missing your train.

If you have extra time before your train, vending machines on the platform of out-of-service trains are recommended. You can purchase without feeling rushed.

For those who love Starbucks coffee, there is a Starbucks 'JR Tokai Tokyo Station Shinkansen South Platform Store' located inside South Transfer of Tōkaidō , Sanyō Shinkansen Tracks at Tokyo Station.

Onboard wagon sales on the Tokaido Shinkansen ended on October 31, 2023. Starting November 1, 2023, passengers in Green Cars (excluding Kodama trains) can order meals and beverages using the QR code provided at each seat.
An announcement about the end of service was made just before Kyoto Station on the outbound line and just before Shin-Yokohama Station on the inbound line.
